The origin of Léoville Las Cases dates back to the 17th century, when the property (then part of the larger Léoville estate) was owned by prominent French noble families. After the French Revolution, the vast Léoville domain was split – a portion became Léoville-Barton, and in 1840 the Las Cases family's 3/5 share formed Château Léoville Las Cases, comprising the historic heart of the vineyard. The estate was acquired by wine merchant Théophile Skawinski around 1900 and later passed by inheritance to the Delon family, who have run it since the mid-20th century (now led by Jean-Hubert Delon). Notably, Léoville Las Cases' 1971 vintage placed among the top wines at the 1976 "Judgment of Paris" tasting, cementing its reputation.
