Clos des PapesChâteauneuf-du-Pape2006

846 in stock

Clos des Papes makes one red and one white Châteauneuf-du-Pape. No special cuvées, no prestige bottlings. The red is typically around 65% Grenache, 20% Mourvèdre and 10% Syrah, sourced from 24 different parcels across the appellation. 2006 was a strong vintage in the Southern Rhône: warm and dry, producing concentrated wines with good structure. At nearly 20 years old, this is in a sweet spot of maturity. Paul-Vincent Avril uses no new oak, ages in old foudres and bottles unfiltered. The 2005 vintage won Wine Spectator's Wine of the Year.

About This Producer

The Avril family has been present in Châteauneuf-du-Pape since at least the 18th century, with records showing family members acting as local treasurers and consuls. Paul Avril (1873–1962) began selling wine under the Clos des Papes name in 1896 and registered the brand in 1902. He played a direct role in establishing the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation in 1936. His son Régis delivered wines to Presidents de Gaulle and Pompidou at the Élysée. The second Paul Avril joined in 1963 and shaped the estate's identity after training in Burgundy. Paul-Vincent Avril, the current generation, joined in 1988 after a stint at Mouton Rothschild and has maintained the philosophy of producing only one red and one white, with no concessions to fashion.
