Gaja's Barolo from the Marenca and Rivette crus in Serralunga d'Alba. Sperss means "nostalgia" in Piedmontese dialect, and the wine was first produced in 1992 after Angelo Gaja returned to Barolo following a long absence. 1999 was an outstanding Piedmont vintage: warm and balanced, producing wines with both power and finesse. At 25+ years old, this is drinking in a mature window where Nebbiolo's secondary aromas of leather, tar and dried herbs take over from the primary fruit. Note: between 1996 and 2012, Sperss was declassified from Barolo DOCG to Langhe Nebbiolo DOC because Gaja added a small percentage of Barbera.

About This Producer

Giovanni Gaja opened a restaurant in Barbaresco and started making wine to serve alongside the food. He founded the winery in 1859, and it was one of the first in Piedmont to bottle and sell wine outside the region. Angelo Gaja, the fourth generation, joined in 1961 after studying in Alba, Montpellier and Turin. He introduced practices that were considered heresy at the time: French barriques instead of large Slavonian casks, drastic yield reduction through green harvesting, and the planting of Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay in Nebbiolo country. In 1996, he famously declassified his single-vineyard wines from DOCG Barbaresco to Langhe DOC to have more blending freedom, a move that shocked the Italian wine establishment.
