Domaine de Trevallon Trevallon Rouge2003
Trévallon makes arguably the finest red wine in Provence, from a 50/50 blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah planted on limestone slopes of the Alpilles. When AOC rules in 1994 demanded they cut Cabernet to 20%, founder Eloi Dürrbach refused and accepted a downgrade to IGP rather than change a single vine. The 2003 is fully mature at 20+ years: garrigue, black olive, dried herb and dark berry fruit, with silky tannins and a long, savoury finish. Drink now.

About This Producer
Eloi Dürrbach was the son of sculptor René Dürrbach, a friend of Picasso. He abandoned architecture studies in 1973 to plant vines on the Alpilles, literally using dynamite to break through the rocky limestone. The first wines were produced in 1976. In 1994, when the AOC demanded he reduce Cabernet to 20% of the blend, Eloi refused and accepted a downgrade to IGP Alpilles rather than compromise. René Dürrbach died in 2000, leaving behind 50 artistic posters that now serve as wine labels. A new winery was constructed in 2013. Eloi passed in 2021; wife Floriane and children Ostiane and Antoine now manage the property.
