Clos Mogador

The estate that started the Priorat revolution

Est. 1979

About the Estate

Clos Mogador is one of the five estates that put Priorat back on the map in the late 1980s. René Barbier III, born in Tarragona to a family of French winemakers, acquired his first vineyard in the village of Gratallops in 1979. For the first three vintages (1989–1991), he and four other producers shared a single winery and released their wines under separate labels. That joint 1989 vintage announced the arrival of modern Priorat. In 2006, Clos Mogador became the first wine in Catalonia to receive the Vi de Finca Qualificada designation, the highest quality distinction in the region. The estate has been certified organic since 2012 and farms biodynamically.

Terroir

The estate covers about 24 hectares in the village of Gratallops, on steep terraced slopes of llicorella (crumbled red and black slate) in a natural amphitheatre near the Siurana River. Elevations reach up to 800 metres. Some vines are over 100 years old. The Mediterranean climate is hot and dry, but the altitude and surrounding mountains create a microclimate that preserves acidity. All farming is organic and biodynamic, timed to the lunar calendar. Recent vintages have moved toward larger foudres (2,000–2,500 litres) and away from small barriques, with increased use of whole clusters and less extraction.
