Comtes Lafon
Volnay 1er Cru 'Santenots du Milieu'
A revered Volnay premier cru from the legendary Comtes Lafon estate. The 2013 Santenots-du-Milieu offers deep aromas of kirsch, blackberry, dark chocolate and licorice, lifted by a violet florality. Concentrated yet silky, it delivers a core of dark cherry, menthol and spice wrapped in fine tannins and a subtle saline mineral streak. The finish is long and vibrant — a Burgundy of remarkable depth and finesse.

About This Producer
The roots of Comtes Lafon go back to 1869, when the Boch family built the estate house and cellar (Clos de la Barre) in Meursault. In 1894, Jules Lafon – a successful lawyer (later mayor of Meursault) – married Marie Boch, bringing those choice vineyards into the Lafon family and giving the domaine its name. Jules Lafon expanded the holdings (notably acquiring plots in the Grand Cru Montrachet in 1919) and in 1923 founded the famous Meursault Paulée harvest feast. Through the mid-20th century, much of the Lafon vineyards were leased out under sharecropping contracts, and the wines were not estate-bottled. This changed when Jules's grandson René Lafon began reclaiming the vineyards in 1956 as leases expired. By 1961, Domaine des Comtes Lafon was bottling its own wine and steadily restoring its reputation. René's son, Dominique Lafon, took over in 1985 and propelled the estate to new heights. Dominique ended the remaining métayage leases, so that by 1993 all family vineyards were back in their direct care. He also modernized the viticulture – converting to organic farming in 1995 and fully biodynamic by 1998 – and refined the winemaking (indigenous yeasts, long lees contact, minimal filtration). These efforts paid off spectacularly: by the 2000s Comtes Lafon was universally regarded as a top "reference-point" domaine.
