The Manetti family (famous for their terracotta business) purchased the rundown Fontodi estate in 1968 and set about revitalizing its vineyards in the heart of Chianti Classico. Giovanni Manetti took charge in 1979–1980, bringing a forward-thinking approach focused on Sangiovese quality. In 1981, at not even 20 years old, Giovanni produced the first vintage of Flaccianello, a 100% Sangiovese wine that helped spearhead the Super-Tuscan movement. Fontodi continued to innovate, converting to organic viticulture (certified from 2008), and refining its range with cru selections (Vigna del Sorbo, etc.). Today it stands as a champion of Sangiovese, consistently producing some of Italy’s most acclaimed red wines
