Egon MullerRiesling Scharzhofberg Spatlese2005
Egon Müller's Scharzhofberg is arguably the single greatest Riesling vineyard in Germany, its grey slate soils dating back to Roman-era cultivation. The 2005 Spätlese sits at 8.5% ABV, with the tension between residual sweetness and Saar acidity completely intact after 20 years. White peach and honeycomb on the nose, a slatey mineral thread running through the palate, and a finish that seems to go on for minutes. These wines can age for 30+ years, and this bottle is still developing.

About This Producer
Jean-Jacques Koch purchased the Scharzhof estate from the French Republic in 1797, though the Scharzhofberg vineyard has been cultivated since Roman times and was farmed by monks from the 8th century. In 1887, Egon Müller I married Therese Tuckermann, whose father invested substantially to expand the estate. The family built global recognition through world exhibitions, most notably Paris in 1900. Egon Müller IV has run the estate since 1991, maintaining the family's quality-first approach and keeping production deliberately small.
