Francois RaveneauChablis 1er Cru 'Butteaux2015
Raveneau is widely considered the greatest producer in Chablis, and Butteaux is their most age-worthy premier cru. The vineyard sits on Kimmeridgian clay-limestone studded with fossilised oyster shells, and Raveneau ages the wine in old 132-litre feuillettes, a practice almost nobody else in Chablis still follows. The 2015 has citrus oil and crushed shell on the nose, a dense, mineral palate, and the kind of energy that suggests another 20+ years of development. Allocation-only wines at most retailers.

About This Producer
François Raveneau married Andrée Dauvissat in 1948, combining his own purchased vineyards with parcels from the Dauvissat wine family. During the 1960s and 70s, when Chablis was in economic crisis, François acquired exceptional vineyard land at low prices. American importer Kermit Lynch discovered the wines in 1976 and brought them to international attention from 1979. Jean-Marie Raveneau took over winemaking by 1984, and brother Bernard joined in 1995. The fourth generation (Isabelle and Maxime) joined between 2010 and 2017.
