Château de Beaucastel

Biodynamic pioneers of Châteauneuf-du-Pape since 1549

Est. 1549

About the Estate

Beaucastel is the benchmark estate of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the only property that grows all 13 permitted grape varieties, and a pioneer of biodynamic viticulture in the Southern Rhône since 1974. Pierre de Beaucastel purchased vineyards in Coudoulet in 1549. In 1909, Pierre Tramier bought the estate and replanted after phylloxera. Jacques Perrin transformed it into a global icon by pioneering organic farming in the 1950s and biodynamic viticulture in 1974, decades before it became fashionable. Wine Spectator named the 1989 vintage its Wine of the Year. The Hommage à Jacques Perrin cuvée, with 60%+ Mourvèdre, represents the pinnacle of Southern Rhône winemaking. The estate is now in its fifth generation and a member of Primum Familiae Vini.

Terroir

100 hectares (70 in Châteauneuf-du-Pape AOC, 30 in Côtes du Rhône) on the appellation's famous galets roulés: large rounded river stones that absorb sunlight during the day and radiate warmth at night. Below the stones lie layers of sand, clay and limestone providing excellent drainage. The Mistral wind reduces disease pressure naturally. With over 50 years of organic farming, the vines dig exceptionally deep.
