Giuseppe Rinaldi

Arch-traditionalist icon of old-school Barolo

Est. 1870

About the Estate

Giuseppe Rinaldi is the purest expression of traditional Barolo. Six generations of the Rinaldi family have farmed in the heart of the village since 1870, using tall upright oak vats, spontaneous fermentation and long maceration while their neighbours adopted barriques and rotary fermenters. Giovanni Battista Rinaldi merged his vineyards with those of his wife Ludovica Barale in 1870. The first wines under the Giuseppe Rinaldi label appeared in 1921. Battista, a trained enologist, took over in 1947 and acquired the important Cannubi San Lorenzo vineyard. Giuseppe 'Beppe' Rinaldi, the fifth generation, assumed control in 1992 and became the fiercest defender of traditional methods during an era when modern Barolo was in fashion. Beppe passed in 2018; his wife Alessia and daughters Marta and Carlotta now carry on, representing the sixth generation. The estate added 1.3 hectares in Bussia in 2019.
