About the Estate

Penfolds is Australia's most recognised wine estate, and one of the few New World producers whose top wines trade alongside the great châteaux and domaines of Europe. Dr. Christopher Rawson Penfold and his wife Mary established Magill Estate in Adelaide's foothills in 1844. The Nuriootpa winery in Barossa Valley was built in 1911. Max Schubert created Grange in the 1950s and launched Bin 707 in 1964 as the estate's flagship Cabernet Sauvignon, made only in years the fruit is deemed good enough. Peter Gago has been Chief Winemaker since 2002. The estate's Barossa Valley holdings include the Kalimna vineyard, home to Block 42 with Cabernet vines planted in 1888, the oldest commercial planting in the world.
