Aldo Conterno
Bridging tradition and modernity in Barolo
Est. 1969
About the Estate
Aldo Conterno founded his estate in 1969 after splitting from his brother Giovanni over differing winemaking philosophies. Giovanni stayed ultra-traditional; Aldo pioneered a middle path with temperature-controlled fermentation and shortened maceration, but large Slavonian oak rather than barriques. The Conterno family had been making wine since the 19th century, bottling their first Barolo Riserva in the 1920s. After military service in Korea, Aldo returned in 1961 when his father Giacomo handed the winery to his sons. Disagreements with Giovanni led Aldo to buy the Favot farm in Bussia and establish Poderi Aldo Conterno. The first commercial Gran Bussia was the 1971 vintage. The flagship Riserva ages 6+ years before release and is one of Barolo's most collectable wines. Aldo passed in 2012; sons Franco, Stefano and Giacomo now run the 25-hectare estate.
