Domaine Trapet (Père et Fils)

Est. 1870

About the Estate

Trapet is one of Gevrey-Chambertin's great estates, holding parcels in Chambertin Grand Cru and farming biodynamically since 1998, among the first in the Côte de Nuits to do so. The family has been in Gevrey since the 1870s, when Louis Trapet famously defied convention (and the law) by secretly grafting American rootstock onto his phylloxera-ravaged vines at night, making Trapet one of the first Burgundian estates to successfully combat the disease. In 1990, the family's vineyard holdings were split: Jean-Louis Trapet took control of one portion, renamed Domaine Trapet Père et Fils, while another branch formed Domaine Rossignol-Trapet. Jean-Louis assumed full leadership in 1993, converted to biodynamics by 1998, and refocused the winemaking on elegance over power. He and his wife Andrée (who brought her own family vineyards in Alsace) now work with the next generation across 18.5 hectares, all in the Côte de Nuits.

Terroir

18.5 hectares entirely in the Côte de Nuits, primarily in Gevrey-Chambertin. The estate holds parcels in Chambertin and Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru, along with several premier crus and village-level vineyards. All vines are farmed biodynamically. The limestone and marl soils of Gevrey give the wines their characteristic structure, while Trapet's gentle extraction and emphasis on whole-cluster fermentation produce wines that favour finesse and transparency.
