Ciacci Picolomini D'Aragona
About the Estate
Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona is one of the leading estates in Montalcino, with a history that reads more like a novel than a wine brochure. The estate dates to the 17th century and a palazzo built by the Bishop of Montalcino. It passed to the Ciacci family in 1877 and through marriage became the Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona palace. When Countess Elda Ciacci, the last of the noble line, died without heirs in 1985, she unexpectedly left the entire property to Giuseppe Bianchini, her estate manager. Giuseppe transformed what had been a small farm making wine for local use into an internationally recognised Brunello producer. Since his passing in 2004, his children Paolo and Lucia have continued improving quality. The single-vineyard Pianrosso, from high-elevation rocky plots in the Castelnuovo dell'Abate zone, is the estate's flagship. The estate farms 40 hectares organically.
